End of an era as popular PC hangs up his helmet
A well-known beat bobby – affectionately nicknamed "Captain Birdseye" by youngsters on his patch has retired.
PC John Arbon (58) called it a day after serving Suffolk Police for almost 30 years, and all but one of the last ten years in Hadleigh.
The town’s police chief, Insp Jim White, said "PC Arbon will be missed when he retires. We will be sorry to see him go and I would like to thank him publicly for all his efforts."
PC Arbon, the oldest beat officer in the county, said "I have enjoyed my time in Hadleigh and I have had some good years here."
"During my time, the quality of people’s welfare has always been important to me, and I have endeavoured to work hard to achieve that across all the age ranges in the town."
PC Arbon joined the force in 1970 after a 12-year stint in the Navy, starting off as an officer in Sudbury before moving on to the firearms team at Martlesham HQ, and then on to the marine section.
He was posted to Hadleigh as a patrol officer in 1990 and, after a one-year spell at Ipswich, returned as the town’s beat bobby.
In the last five years he has been at the forefront of attempts to get improved leisure facilities for the town’s youth – who have been criticised by some of the older members of the town for their antics.
PC Arbon’s replacement will be 25-year-old PC Stuart Colbear, who joined the force in 1996.
PC Colbear, who comes to Hadleigh after 18 months as a rural patrol officer based at Capel St Mary is currently "learning the ropes" from PC Arbon.

22nd International East Anglian Summer Music Festival
Andrew and Jane Philips team up for Summer Music
Andrew Phillips, violin/viola and his wife Jane, clarinet, will play an important part in the 22nd International East Anglian Summer Music Festival. Andrew serves as Leader of the
Orchestra and has been playing in the Festival since 1988, whilst Jane has joined him in works on occasions requiring clarinet.
Born in Swansea in 1962, Andrew was very involved with the Youth Orchestra of both West Glamorgan and Wales before entering Goldsmiths’ College, University of London, where he graduated with First Class Honours in
1984. After studying with Erich Gruenberg at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and a Master of Music degree in Historical Musicology at Goldsmiths, Andrew has followed a teaching and performing career and is
currently Director of Music at Notting Hill and Ealing High School for Girls in London. He has led the London City Chamber Orchestra since 1994 and performed a great number of chamber works in the Festival, including the
two Busoni Violin Sonatas, a large number of Beethoven Violin Sonatas, and will this season be heard in the Poulenc Sonata for Violin and Piano.
Clarinetist Jane studied with Jack Brymer as a teenager and was a member of the Beverley Chamber Orchestra and Hull Philharmonic Orchestra before studying music at Goldsmiths’ college, where she studied with Ian
Mitchell. Her first performance of the Copland Clarinet Concerto, which she will perform 5/6th August with the London City Chamber Orchestra, was made at that time. She is a member of various chamber groups
and is an active member of the nucleus of players which form the London City Chamber Orchestra Ensemble.
Old School Melody
In what has to be a concert full of the most beautiful melodies ever presented at The Old School in 22 years, the third weekend of the current 22nd International East Anglian Summer
Music Festival will include works for four hand piano by Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869).
A flamboyant character and America’s first concert pianist, Gottschalk toured the world in the 19th century and beguiled his audiences with fantastic melodies and ear-catching rhythms. It promises to be a
happy occasion, and one of the highlights of the Festival.
Joining Holger Aston and Thomas McIntosh, four hands at one piano, Janet Howd, soprano, will sing Five Songs by George Antheil, Three Songs by Aaron Copland and Three Songs by Kurt Weill, all composers whose centenaries
are being celebrated in Hadleigh.

Brownie Tea Party
On Tuesday 27th July, Hadleigh Brownies held a wonderful Tea Party for Mencap.
They raised a whopping total of £62.85 and they were chuffed with that magnificent achievement. They think it is enough for a certificate each.
At the tea party they held a very fun raffle; there was a box and you put your hand in and you picked out either a yellow, green, red or blue straw. If you picked out any of those colours you won a certain prize, which
was either 3 sweets, 1 sweet, a lolly and a sweet, 1 lolly, 1 lolly and 2 sweets.
They are all very proud and pleased to say that they are happy with the excellent result.

A Curate’s thanks
Following my Ordination as Deacon at Bury St Edmund’s Cathedral on Sunday 2nd July, and my move to live and work within Hadleigh and its benefice, I have been "overwhelmed"
by such a warm welcome from everyone!
A big thanks to the people that cut the lawns and had the rubbish removed. A big thanks, also, to those who came and supported me on the day, for all the beautiful cards, the flowers, the welcoming service with wine and
"nibbles", the offers of assistance, the raspberries, the delicious jam and the welcoming conversations that my family and I have received.
It is a real privilege to become a member of such a community. Thank you! And may God bless you all in your journey of life, and I give thanks to God that I have been called to share in your journey as Curate of St Mary’s
and the Hadleigh benefice.
A Big Thanks from Revd Jane Weeks (823235)

RTTC Disco disaster
Hi, it’s Trev and Rich here from RTTC mobile discos, just to let you know what’s happening with us.
Our disco has been going since May 1999. When we started with a few bookings, during the past year we have taken more and more bookings. We have played at all different venues and halls, including Ipswich Town Football
Club and small kid’s parties, to the older generation. Bookings have picked up very well, and we have had a lot of response from gigs saying how good our disco has been, and booking us for themselves. We had 14 gigs
from May to December 1999, and this year we have done 18 gigs so far, and we would have done a lot more if this crime didn’t happen.
On 21st June our storage place was broken into and all the disco equipment was stolen, leaving us without any equipment for the eight gigs we had booked up for July. We are waiting for the insurance company
to get in touch, then we will be back on the road again. Let me just say at this time we are very sorry for any problems we may have caused to people who had made bookings for July, and we hope you will book us again in
the near future.
If you have never seen our disco you are missing out on one of the best lighting shows in Suffolk. If you sit watching the national lottery you will see all the laser lights they use. Well, we have similar sorts of
equipment, so you get lots of light for your money. We are very reasonably priced and we cater for all ages. We also have a computer track search system, so when you go up to a DJ and ask to play a track, we can tell you
if we have it on the spot, and put your track on next.
If you are interested in booking us you can call:
DJ Trev – 01473 827307
DJ Rich – 01473 824295
We are also on the Internet: trevrttic@aol.co
Our new web site is to be arranged, so keep your eyes open.
And when the new Yellow Pages is out you will find our number in there, and also on Talking Pages and in Hadleigh Community News.
Hope you will get in touch and book us, and keep your eyes open for more events in this magazine.
All the best.
DJ Trev and DJ Rich

Hadleigh Charity Shop
Dear Givers and Customers,
The 2nd August is the 1st birthday of the shop, and apart from one or two hiccups it has been a wonderful year. Your contributions and support have been marvellous and continue to be so.
Carrying on from last month’s Newsletter, we have now donated on your behalf money to the following charities:
Riding for the Disabled, Shelley, sponsoring three horses for one year. The horses have sent a photograph of themselves together with the story of their life.
Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. This donation has been made in memory of Graham Ward who was from Hadleigh and Whatfield.
Multiple Sclerosis (Molly Leathers)
Hadleigh Volunteer Centre
Hadleigh Battle of Britain Association
Laying Playing Field.
We have more money to donate, and would welcome suggestions for its use.
We also need some more help – particularly on a Saturday, and to help when other volunteers are on holiday. It is really good fun and you meet lots of lovely people.
We look forward to the next year with great confidence and with your help, as in the past, we can continue to give help where it is needed.
Warmest thanks and regards from all the volunteers.

Hello and welcome to HYPE!!
Well, here we are again! Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone who supported us on our Funday back on the 15th July. I hope you spotted our noisy antics parading down the High Street in
fancy dress, with Belinda sat in a bath of mud! Despite the cold, she loved it really.
To all of you given PLEDGE FORMS on the day, please spare a few moments just to fill it in and to think what it will mean to your children or relations in a few years time.
The total raised on the day was well over £300, which takes the estimated HYPE Fund to over £1000, which is tremendous for six weeks work.
On the actual day the weather held out – well, just, and East House attracted quite a crowd, with the main attractions being ‘Splat the Rat’, ‘Aunt Sally’, the Barbecue and Linda’s fancy dress invention
Cruella Deville!!
The Raffle proved a great success with many local businesses donating the prizes – there were over 30!! A big thank you to those businesses who did donate a prize. They were very gratefully received.
The day was very enjoyable, and I hope our next few events continue to get better and better, raising even more lovely dosh for our funds. Thank you goes out to everyone who made and gave us cakes to sell on the day in
our café and car boot jumble for the table tops.
Another big thank you goes to Dale Avis of St Mary’s Primary School. Dale, with the help of Class 6, raised us money for our funds by organising a drawing competition between his classmates to illustrate what they
hoped to look like in 10 years time. We hope Dale will continue to help us when he joins the High School in September.
It’s nice to know we are gathering new supporters all the time, and this in turn increases our funds along the way.
If you have a pledge slip, we at HYPE would now like to ask you to return them to us with the donated money. We aim to collect all the outstanding pledges throughout the summer,
so please hand them in ASAP to East House, or to the address on the slip.
If you feel you would like to help us in any way whatsoever, don’t hesitate to contact East House leaving your name and number, or come to our meetings advertised in the East House windows.
However, we’d like it if lots more of you took this opportunity to get involved. Many of you whinge and moan to us that there is nothing available, but when we do organise an event not very many of you turned up during
the day. In fact there were no fancy dress competitors at all, which was disappointing considering I’d visited both primary schools in the days leading up to the event and interest was high! So come on, shake a leg and
take a look around for our next event……
Next event for August:
*’HOAX’ TEAM AND *WORLD CHAMP
are coming to Hadleigh soon to support HYPE!!
So WATCH THIS SPACE for more details!
We anticipate this will be a superb day, with professional boarders giving displays, dishing out advice and there will be merchandise for sale, and we are hoping they will donate a board to
raffle off. Posters will be distributed as soon as we have organised and confirmed the final dates and details.
Please remember!! We want your views and suggestions, so get your voice and your ideas heard now. We will have the summer holidays to go yet, so if you would like to organise an event or pledge a donation, no matter how
small, your help will be gratefully received.
Send your letters to me : Naomi @ 52 Yeoman Way, Hadleigh.
P.S. DON’T FORGET YOUR PLEDGES!!

The Mayor’s Month
This month has been quieter than last – just as well!! The main event was the 600 Charter Day in Ipswich which I attended, accompanied by the Town Clerk, Bob Stevens. It was very splendid with all
the Mayors from roundabout, including Norwich. Later I learnt that I had been taken for a French mayor!
I also attended a Reception given by the High Sheriff of Suffolk and Mrs Clement – luckily the rain stopped for that evening as the party was in the Garden and very enjoyable.
Last weekend I was at the launch of HYPE and attended The Bath down the High Street. Many thanks for the support given to the raffle by the traders in the town. Well done to HYPE for organising the fun.

Hadleigh WI Market
United Reformed Church Hall every Friday 8.30am-11.45am
Despite the abysmal weather we have had a good showing with soft fruit, plants, herbs and vegetables so far. This month will see further supplies of fruit, salads and vegetables, all fresh from
the garden.
With the fruit comes the jam-making season, and good supplies are available each week. To publicise our range we shall be holding a Tasting Day for preserves on Friday 25th
August.
Come and taste before your buy! We also now have a supplier for honey, a delicious addition to our offerings each week.
The weather does not affect the baking table which continues to delight with constant variety.
You need to be EARLY to get the best selection, unless of course you order your requirements.
The crafts table always has that something a little different. Innovation is the keynote here and we try to please, but we would welcome new providers with new ideas – come and talk to us. Now is
the time to order knitwear and Christmas presents.
We have fresh free-range eggs each week, as long as you come early, and there is a cup of tea or coffee and a chat always at hand.
Come and see us first on Fridays!!

Help improve Sam’s life
Fish & chip supper and dance
Sam is our son. He is ten years old and from the outside he looks to be a fine, healthy lad and perfectly normal. But he is autistic. He cannot talk and lacks the basic communication and social
skills which the rest of us take for granted. This means that his behaviour often alienates him, and causes disapproval from the casual onlooker.
Sam attends a special autistic school, and he has come to rely on card symbols to relay his basic needs, but recently he has had the opportunity of using a portable computerised communication aid, which he can operate by
icons representing various symbols which then produce a computer voiced sentence. During the trial of the aid, he was obviously enjoying the experience of making his wants known in a format which could be understood by
the normal person.
We would love to get one of these aids for Sam to use, as we feel sure they would open up opportunities for him to communicate and perhaps lose some of that helpless frustration he must feel.
The problem is that the equipment costs several thousand pounds, but we feel so strongly that it would benefit Sam and so some good friends of ours have kindly offered to help fund raise, with the aim of buying one of
these machines, in the next twelve months.
Our first fundraising function is a fish and chip supper and dance, with the excellent ‘That Band’ providing the music.
This is on Saturday 23rd September in Whatfield Community Hall, and tickets priced £8 are available from Trish Whittle on 01473 827826 and Janet Webb on 01473 828094 and ourselves, Alan and Angie Mondon on
01449 740010. Any offers of raffle prizes will be very gratefully received.
We do hope you will be able to join us and enjoy yourselves and help us in our attempt to provide something which will make Sam’s life just that bit better.
We will be arranging other events in the coming months.

Hearing problems?
Karen S Finch, R.H.A.D., M.S.H.A.A. Local independent hearing aid audiologist caring for the hard of hearing
In the UK nearly half (48%) of people over 55 have some form of hearing loss and this figure rises to 93% of people over 80. Hearing loss that is ignored can lead to frustration, isolation and
can cause strain on relationships. "Eyes can be tested and glasses made within an hour, yet it can take up to 19 months to have a hearing test and hearing aids fitted on the NHS. Even then, what you are given is 30
years out of date". This quote was taken from a report just released from the RNID Waiting to Hear?
Karen Finch, R.H.A.D., M.S.H.A.A., has a dedicated hearing centre in the High Street, Ipswich (just around the corner from Marks & Spencer’s) called The Hearing Care
Centre. She also has weekly hearing aid clinics within the GP Country practice in Needham Market and The Health Centre in Stowmarket.
Karen’s main ambition is to help those who suffer with hearing problems in the Suffolk/Essex area. Karen is fully qualified, registered with the Hearing Aid Council; a member of the British
Society of Hearing Aid Audiologist, the British Society of Audiology and a full member of AIHHP (Assoc of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals). She has been working with the hard of hearing for over seven years,
and has also trained with the British Tinnitus Association as a lay counsellor. She receives constant updates and training in the latest digital hearing aid technology, and is committed to providing and maintaining the
highest professional and ethical standards in hearing care.
"I strongly believe in old fashioned service, combined with expert knowledge of all the latest hearing aid technology. Being independent enables me to have no specific
commitment to any one manufacturer of hearing instruments. I deal with all the leading names in hearing aid manufacture and development such as Siemens, Widex, Oticon, Phonak, Starkey, Phillips and many others. I can
supply most makes of hearing instrument."
Karen also provides Health and Safety employee screening (Noise at Work Campaign) for factories etc., custom made ear protection for swimmers, musicians, motorcyclists etc and a hearing aid
repair service for all makes of hearing aid.
It is quite evident that Karen really enjoys her work. She receives tremendous satisfaction when her patients express their delight at being able to hear the birds singing and being able to converse in a busy
environment. She believes in good old-fashioned service and independent advice; she will work with the most difficult of hearing losses with unlimited patience and devotion.
BBC’s Healthcheck programme on 01.02.99 confirmed that ‘1 in 3’ people have a hearing problem but just don’t recognise it. Karen stresses it is really important to have your
hearing checked regularly, so don’t put it off, give Karen a call and put your mind at rest.

Pensioners’ meeting
I intend to hold a meeting with speakers from the Suffolk Pensioners Association at the Hadleigh Library on Thursday 24th August at 7.30pm.
As you all know, the Basic State Pension will increase by 75p per week commencing next April. This I, and many others, consider a disgrace. If the link with average earnings had not been broken in 1980 it would have been
over £95 per week, instead of, as now, £67.50.
A petition form for the restoration of the link to be restored to average earnings will be there and others will be distributed around the town as part of a National campaign. Millions of signatures are needed by the 31st
October and I am sure the Hadleigh residents will do their share in supporting a just cause.
Brian L Lazenby, Town Councillor
For the record, the Mayor’s charity donations for last year included The War Memorial, The Hadleigh Community Transport Group, The Pager Fund, The Pheonix Youth Club and several small donations to others.

event for the enjoyment of all the family.
The Millennium Wards for all Committee last month awarded Hadleigh Tennis Club a lottery grant of £2000 to help pay for staging there-enactment of that tournament which was held on the Cricket Club field almost 100
years ago.
On Sunday 3rd September the same venue will be used for an Edwardian day of entertainment for all ages. A tennis tournament with players from local clubs will take place on four modern-style courts, although the
competitors will be required to dress in Edwardian style clothes. Two ‘hour glass’ courts, as used in the Edwardian era, will be marked out and available for all comers to try their hand – provided they are dressed
appropriately!
In one of the marquees, Gerald Gurney, president of the UK Tennis Collectors Society, will be staging an exhibition of racquet sports memorabilia. Over many years Gerald has accumulated an enormous array of historical
sports equipment and ephemera, including an exact copy of the Wimbledon Place, which was made at the same time as the one awarded to the ladies singles Wimbledon champion every year. Have your photograph taken with the
replica plate and fool your friends!
All around the field there will be stalls, roundabouts, and various other amusements and entertainment to help ensure everyone has an enjoyable day out. Refreshments, barbeque and bar will be available all day. Entry to
the ground will be free.
To help add to the atmosphere of the day, it is hoped as many visitors as possible will dress in Edwardian style. Ladies, it’s your opportunity to wear some stunning headgear, and gentlemen, you’d better start
growing that moustache now!
The organising committee have invited other local clubs, societies, schools and organisations to participate in the event to make the day one that as many people as possible can enjoy. As Lee Nichols, Chairman of the
Hadleigh Tennis Club says, "We cannot promise Pete Sampras, the Williams sisters, or even Sue Barker, but we can promise everyone tennis and other activities which will, hopefully, make for a memorable occasion.
Mark the date in your diary now, and look forward to a wonderful Edwardian day in Hadleigh. Even if you are not a tennis fan, there will be lots of other attractions to keep you amused.

Hadleigh helps celebrate Millennium Festival of Cycling
The benefits of cycling and the National Cycle Network were the focus for national celebrations during a four day period at the end of June, and with local and national cycle routes passing through
the town this was an ideal opportunity for Hadleigh residents to ‘get on their bikes’. Assisted by the very willing support of local businesses, voluntary groups and private individuals in towns and villages all
along the route, local organisers had arranged an ambitious programme of events, refreshments and card/sticker collection points throughout Suffolk and Essex.
On the Sunday, numbers of people out cycling were variable; in some areas it was relatively quiet (no doubt as a result of numerous other events on the same day) whilst some places were rather busier – at the Hadleigh
milepost about 40 people collected stickers on their commemorative ride card in a couple of hours, and in north Suffolk more than 400 people joined the celebrations at Beccles.
The event proved to be a very enjoyable experience for everyone taking part, especially those cycling along the routes for the first time. Here are some of the comments received by the organisers:
"Thanks to everyone who obviously worked so hard to organise this event. There were many excellent stopping places on the section from the Essex border to north of Ipswich which I did with my 9 year old son.
Top marks go to the lovely lady at Threeways outside Elmsett who did marvellous cream teas in her delightful garden and the team at Flowton church who had a freezer in the church porch to provide ice creams for eating in
the peaceful surroundings of the beautiful churchyard. We feel inspired to do more of the Route 1 in the summer holidays."
"What a good day for cycling; our faces are all shiny and healthy now! The boys and I have just returned from our grand day out – they have really enjoyed it and collected 5 stamps! I suppose we cycled about 18
miles (gosh!)….saw parts of places never seen before. Of course, lunch out at a pub, lots of ‘tea’ stops and ending with a visit to a windmill rather helped!"
Hadleigh milepost was a popular ‘sticker stop’ during the celebrations to mark the opening of National Cycle Route 1 and Babergh District Council’s ‘Cycle South Suffolk’ routes.

Land’s End to Hadleigh!
Hadleigh man Paul Oxford is gearing up for a long-distance wheelchair dash to raise money for charity.
He will be accompanied on the 500-mile journey from Land’s End to Hadleigh by walkers Val Branch and Liz Allen, who have been walking 20 miles a day in preparation.
Paul (35) who manages the Toyzone Plus store in Sudbury’s Borehamgate, has been confined to a wheelchair for ten years since falling 250 feet from a window, but he has not let this ruin his enjoyment of sport, and he
will be wheeling his chair unaided on the trek.
The former Scots Guard holds several medals for athletics which he won in the ex-services world games, and is a keen basketball player.

A welcome gift for 1000th member
Peake Fitness at The Stoke by Nayland Club in Leavenheath has secured 1000 memberships within their first year of opening
The 1000th member, Yvonne Stacey from Colchester, joined the gym following a recommendation from her husband who has been a member at both Peake Fitness and The Stoke by Nayland Golf Club for the last three months.
Managing Director of The Stoke by Nayland Club, Susanna Rendall, General Manager Derek Howe and Peake Fitness managers, Todd Jones and Dan Smith presented Yvonne with champagne and flowers and Peake Fitness T-shirt, heart monitor, headphones and water bottle.
Commenting on the gifts and the facilities, Yvonne said, "I was really surprised to learn that I was their 1000th member and was more than happy to accept the flowers and champagne! The gym here is so easy to use I just insert a pre-programmed key into the machines and they automatically adjust for my work-out. The heart rate monitor is also a plus because I know that I am exercising at the right level."
