He's been coming to school that way ever since he saw the Harry Potter Film |
This is the month when it all starts to happen, when our major production of “Oliver” takes to the stage. Opening night, November 30th.
Please note that Tickets, priced at £5 with concessions at £4, are available from the Hadleigh Charity Shop in the High Street, on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Indications are that demand will be great, so make sure you do not miss out and get along there quickly to have the pick of the best seats. First come, first served. There are no seats specially reserved.
Thanks must be passed on to the Parents of the younger people taking part as they were absolutely marvellous in getting the appropriate paperwork and photographs back promptly and the application, with all its many problems, has gone in for approval. Keep your fingers crossed.
Next year, 2002, sees the Society preparing a full length play for the Spring (April), which will be followed in September by a Music and Words Show based around memories and songs of the Second World War. Do you remember it? Can you sing or act? If so, get in touch. We wish to make it as authentic as possible. Despite the seriousness of the situation at the time, there was always a wonderful sense of fun and camaraderie that shone through very difficult times for all.
Rachel has set out some details of ideas for the Junior HADS who now number 40 or so, and we are still getting enquiries. We are always glad of help from both Parents and others interested in the Theatre. On that note, would some of you, Members or non-Members, be interested in becoming a Chaperon for the younger element? We must have one adult Chaperon for every 12 Children so you can see we need you to apply. Keith has the necessary forms and there is no cost involved to the applicant.
Our thanks go out to Celotex, who kindly housed our Portakabin for so long and also to Larcombe & Young who have now found us a suitable home for it.
Finally, there are STILL a few Members who have not paid their membership for the year. Please do so urgently, otherwise you will not be able to take part, either in this production or those planned for the first half of 2002. Remember the year runs July to June.
Usual numbers if you have any queries: Martine 824578 or Keith 822396.
After Christmas HADS will be running a series of fortnightly workshops for our junior members exploring various aspects of theatre.
A lot of local talent came to light in our spring production last year and currently with our “Oliver” production. Our aim is to build on this talent, introduce new skills, provide a forum for shared learning and a place to have fun on a regular basis!
In the summer months we are looking towards putting a variety show together based on what we have learned.
If you are interested in becoming involved in the planning process, would like to help in the running of the workshops (no experience required – just enthusiasm!) or if you would like to know more please contact Rachel on 823218. Keep an eye on the Community News for further information.
Tuesday 20th November 2001 - The Hadleigh Society - Hadleigh Old Town Hall at 8pm.
The Hadleigh Society’s talk on Tuesday 20th November will be “The History of Cartooning.” In this illustrated talk, Bryan Haylock will trace the development of cartooning and caricature from the days of William Hogarth in the middle of the 18th Century to the modern newspaper political cartoons and humorous drawings.
Friday 30th November 2001, 6 – 8pm
The Mayor, Jan Byrne, and Councillor Ann Stephenson, are arranging a Town Christmas Fair to be held in conjunction with the “Switching On of the Christmas Lights” (arranged as usual by the Chamber of Commerce and Lions).
Societies and Groups wishing to raise money or publicity for their organisations are asked to support the Fair by having a stall. We ask for payment of £10 per stall to cover expenses – the surplus to go to Charity.
The “stalls” will be round the Market Place and Guildhall, or inside the Guildroom if it is wet. The lights will be switched on at 7pm. The Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band will be playing and altogether it should be another fun evening.
CHRISTMAS FAIR – 30TH NOVEMBER 2001, 6 – 8pm
Please return the slip and cheque as soon as possible to Hadleigh Town Council, The Guildhall, Hadleigh IP7 5DT
I am delighted to report that as a direct consequence of the recent Leisure Centre Questionnaire, the Fitness Studio will be opening on Sunday mornings in November from 9am to 11am. This will be for a trial period only. So if you want the Fitness Studio to open every Sunday morning from January come along on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th of November and show us how strong demand really is!
The cutbacks forced upon us earlier in the year have at last paid dividends and a combination of careful book-keeping, loyal staff and some volunteer support means that we are now able to contemplate the appointment of a new manager. We are busy looking at new cardiovascular and resistance equipment for the Fitness Studio, and will be reviewing our maintenance contract. We are also trying to arrange additional classes and will soon be contacting those of you who expressed an interest in joining a User Group. In addition, we are planning to offer corporate membership to local businesses – please telephone the Leisure Centre (824441) so that we can get back to you to discuss your requirements.
We have also received interim funding from Babergh, Suffolk and Hadleigh Town Council. However, guaranteed, on-going financial support, without which the Leisure Centre will not survive, depends on individual users making their views known to Haley Sharpe Consultants, who have just been commissioned to review Hadleigh’s current leisure usage and future needs. It is imperative that everyone, whether a user of the Leisure Centre or not, wishing to express an opinion about the future development of leisure facilities in Hadleigh contact: Dale Lewis, Managing Consultant, Haley Sharpe Consultants, 11-15 Guildhall Lane, Leicester LE1 5QF. October
Another month has rushed past and I am surprised to find that I am half way through my term of office.
I was pleased to be able to talk to so many of you at the Traffic Management exhibition and the working party will be looking at your comments and ideas.
I was also pleased to join the Mayor of Woodbridge at his Civic Service, particularly as this was the first that they had held for many years.
A couple of days later Joe and I enjoyed a short holiday in Cornwall and the Scilly Isles. We particularly enjoyed the gardens at Helligan and on Tresco. Whilst I was away the Deputy Mayor, Richard Whiting, and his wife, attended Stowmarket’s Civic Service.
On our return, the Hadleigh Society hosted an Eastern Region meeting of the Civic Trust. As Mayor I was invited to open their meeting, but preceding this John Bloomfield and I had taken groups on a tour of the Town Centre, Church, Deanery Town and Guildhall Complex. Needless to say they were bowled over by the vast number of listed buildings, and by seeing the buildings in use and not just museum pieces. The speaker in the afternoon was from the Lottery Heritage Fund. She had spent a few hours exploring the Town and had time for a tour of the Guildhall before talking about how the Fund works. We get so used to the beauty of the town in which we live, but showing the town to visitors reminds us of just how lucky we are.
I also, with the Deputy mayor, attended the Suffolk Harvest Festival in the Cathedral at Bury St Edmunds. The Cathedral was packed for the service with Civic Leaders from across Suffolk.
Finally for this month I was invited to join the members of Probus for lunch. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the gentlemen of this organisation and also enjoyed the lunch at The Eight Bells.
Jan Byrne, Mayor of Hadleigh
Extensive public consultation has begun as part of Babergh District Council’s comprehensive review of Hadleigh’s leisure needs.
Haley Sharpe Design Ltd., whom Babergh have appointed as consultants, is now undertaking public surveys in the town to gather together the views of local people into their present leisure uses and future needs. Interviewers stationed at different locations in Hadleigh will be asking both users and non-users of the town’s leisure facilities to answer a number of questions.
According to Tim Mutum, Babergh’s Head of Leisure and Community Services, “Babergh wants to ensure that the leisure needs and uses of Hadleigh people are matched wherever possible by the available facilities. We would, therefore, urge those people who are approached by Haley Sharpe’s interviewers to spend a little time to make their views known.”
“Consultation will be a critical part of the study. Any future proposals must take account of the views of the local community – including current users and non-users – and relevant public, private and community sector organisation which may have an interest in future development of leisure facilities in Hadleigh” agreed Dale Lewis, Managing Consultant of Haley Sharpe.
In addition to these public surveys, contact is also being made with a range of other key groups including the town’s leisure facilities users, local sports clubs, community organisations and schools, as well as other interested local bodies.
10th anniversary year of Community Achievement Award Scheme
Babergh District Council is today putting out the call for nominations for its Community Achievement Award Scheme, now in its 10th Anniversary Year.
The Scheme recognises the work done by people in the community who help to make life better for others and there are two categories of nomination:
Awards for young people under the age of 18 years
Awards for Adults over the age of 18 years
Nomination forms and posters will shortly by circulated to Parish Clerks, Chairmen of Parish Meetings, Headteachers, Community Education Officers and SAVO (Suffolk Association of Voluntary Organisations) and the call has gone out for nominations to be made via these bodies.
Nominations must be received at Babergh District Council Offices in Hadleigh by 30th November
Jill Barton of Babergh District Council and the organiser of the scheme says: “I am really looking forward to receiving the nominations this year as for the first time we have entered into co-sponsorship with Prolog, the Sudbury based e-commerce business specialists. This will enable us to really enhance the status of the Awards and make the ceremony an even more special event for those being honoured.”
Jill goes on to say: “One of our main changes is moving the ceremony to the prestigious Stoke by Nayland Club on 20th February 2002 where we hope to involve a local celebrity in making the awards. Again, I would like to see more nominations for young people – last year we had such a fabulous evening with both young and old receiving their awards together.”

Anyone requiring help or advice regarding abandoned or unwanted animals should contact the RSPCA or Suffolk Animal Rescue – Tel No: 01728 860937 – which is a registered charity.

The Committee is very pleased to announce that, once again, it will be possible this year to maintain the Christmas Gift Voucher at £5.
This is due to an extremely generous donation of £1000 from the Hadleigh Charity Shop, to which the Committee extend a big thank you.
However a further £1500 is still required, and it is hoped, therefore, that members of the business community and other organisation will give their usual support to the scheme by contributing generously to the Christmas Appeal which will take place next month.
For anyone who is unaware of the voucher scheme, it provides a small gift each Christmas to everyone living in Hadleigh who is over 70 by the end of December and has lived in the town for at least 6 months prior to the 1st December.
If there is anyone who is not already receiving a voucher, wishes to receive a voucher, and believes that they may qualify, they should contact Mrs Beryl Allen, Tel: 01473 823184 by 20th November. This is a strict deadline to allow time for the vouchers to be prepared and distributed well before Christmas.
“Babergh is one of the safest places to live in the country and we aim to keep it that way” said Tim Mutum, Babergh District Council’s Head of Leisure and Community Services. “We now need to hear local views again as we plan for a new 3-year crime and disorder strategy.”
Mr Mutum was speaking at the launch of the local Crime and Disorder Partnership’s 6 week consultation process in response to its recent “audit” into the district’s main crime and disorder problems.
The Partnership is made up of Babergh District Council, Suffolk County Council and the local Police, and is tasked with producing 3 year plans aimed at highlighting local crime and disorder issues and implementing solutions.
The new 3 year strategy plan is due to be launched on 1st April 2002 and will be influenced by the responses of local parish and town councils, businesses, voluntary organisations and members of the public to the findings contained in the Partnership’s crime and disorder consultation bulletin and questionnaire.
In particular, the Crime & Disorder Partnership is keen for feedback on the six main priority areas:
Criminal damage, violence and anti-social behaviour in Sudbury Town Centre
Criminal damage and arson in Hadleigh
Commercial related crime in Copdock
Vehicle crime across the district
Domestic violence
Substance misuse (alcohol & drugs)
The Partnership’s findings have been sent out to all local parishes and interested bodies. Tim Mutum was keen to stress that they would “welcome input from any individuals or other bodies who may not as yet have received, but would like a copy”.
Copies of the consultation bulletin and questionnaire can be obtained by calling 01473 826616 or via e-mail on sue.slinn@babergh.gov.uk
Local bodies and agencies are being asked to give the Partnership their views by completing a questionnaire and returning it to Babergh’s offices in Hadleigh by 26th November.
Tim Mutum concluded “Crime and disorder affects all of us in one way or another. We hope that the local communities in Babergh will seize this chance to have their say on local crime solutions.”
Thanks to a change in Government legislation, Babergh District Council’s Strategy Committee has given some good news to local shop owners by extending rate relief to a potential 16 food shops in its area.
“Food shops, such as the local butcher or baker, are absolutely crucial to the healthiness of so many of our local villages” said Bob Southgate, Babergh’s Head of Local Taxation, “and I’m delighted that Babergh has taken further steps to improve the prospects for yet more of them.”
Since 15th August 2001, food shops operating in specified rural areas have been able to receive 50% mandatory rate relief. As part of its innovative approach to local business support, Babergh has already been running its own rate relief scheme since 1996, which has included relief to post offices, general stores and food shops.
According to Bob Southgate, “With the Government picking up a greater proportion of relief granted overall, Babergh is now able to extend the range of its discretionary relief. We are now in a position to help a further 16 food shops for the first time.”
Bob Southgate continued, “We cannot guarantee to keep every food shop open, or to ensure that they remain close at hand, but hopefully this gives the existing network a good chance of ongoing survival.”
Babergh will now conduct an immediate review to accurately implement the new scheme and should issue revised bills to those affected by early November.
Babergh District Council last week gave its backing to a new business centre for Hadleigh, which will provide support for local businesses in the town.
The centre, which will be funded jointly with Suffolk County Council, will be a “managed worksplace” on the model of the successful South Suffolk Business Park in Sudbury. The Hadleigh Business Centre will provide opportunities for local companies to rent office space and make use of facilities such as administration and reception support, as well as the extra provision for a 3000 sq ft pre-school childcare nursery.
Discussions are being held with the Ipswich & Sudbury Enterprise Centre to run the Hadleigh unit.
Babergh will be contributing £45k towards the construction of the centre. According to David Hodge, Chairman of the Economic & Rural Development Task Group, this is an essential investment that will benefit the local economy.
Commenting on the committee’s support for this funding, Cllr Hodge noted that: “Business centres, by providing collective administrative support, are the ideal base for small business. It is also particularly gratifying that we will be able to link pre-school facilities to this development which will be a very real boost to Hadleigh’s industrial infrastructure.”
Malcolm Perrins, Babergh’s Economic Development Officer, agreed with this assessment. Small businesses need support when it comes to reception, switchboard and other administrative services. Equally, it is important for these companies to retain good staff, especially those trying to bring up small children. I believe that the Hadleigh Business Centre will make a positive contribution to helping local businesses in both of these ways.”
Babergh District Council’s offices yesterday hosted a lively meeting of visiting Indonesian MPs, journalists and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) representatives as part of a month long fact finding mission into how British democracy works. The programme was organised on behalf of the British Embassy in Jakarta to assist Indonesia’s preparation for its transition to democracy.
The 15 members of the Indonesian delegation spent time in the council chamber listening to presentations from Councillor Colin Spence, Chairman of the Strategy Committee and Patricia Barnes, Babergh’s Chief Executive. Topics covered included the relationship between the various tiers of local government, the role of a district council and the changing role of elected councillors.
The meeting concluded with a question and answer session.
Ari Taufik, one of the Indonesian delegates, said of their time at Babergh, “We would like to express our gratitude for the hospitality of Babergh District Council. We especially enjoyed our discussions with Councillor Colin Spence and with the Chief Executive, Mrs Patricia Barnes. We have learned from Babergh’s experience of good governance and feel there are many lessons we can apply in Indonesia to enhance our democracy.”
Patricia Barnes added that “it was a great honour that Babergh was chosen to be one of the few local authorities to be included on the delegation’s itinerary.”
